Audio Book Goldwyn: A Biography with FREE EASY Reading!

One of the few "worst' books on the classical Hollywood era I've read, and I've been blessed to have read several excellent books among the more than two dozen I've read. I read this book because I wanted to understand how Samuel Goldwyn fit into the "Hollywood system" in his time. By Hollywood standards, he was more a mensch than not, though he had his rough and dishonest points, as perhaps we all do. I learned a bit despite the fact that Berg's account is very thin on analysis and very long on unspooling endless, mind-numbing detail, at times 90% irrelevant to understanding Goldwyn. If only Berg had been more selective in his approach -- say concentrating on the making of only half dozen of Goldwyn's movies, good and bad -- this book would have been much better, instead he just "spools" endlessly with un-contextualized detail, relevant or not. Finally, at pp. 308 (bottom and 309, quoting others, "Berg" makes the following helpful observations: (1) "[A]s a collaborator [Goldwyn] was inarticulate but stimulating [filling] the room with wonderful panic and beat at your mind like a man in front of a slot machine, shaking it for the jackpot." and (2) "He [was] a Flaubert -- with the exception that the French genius tirelessly explored his own intellect for the perfect effect, while Goldwyn tirelessly explore[d] the intellects that he ha[d] under contract." If you're interested in Sam Goldwyn, how he fit into his era, his family life, his professional strong points and foibles, I recommend you skim this book, quickly panning for the gold.
